Make a cover that matches your book

Create a book cover from inside your LitPal book so the trim size, page count and spine match your interior. Adjust the front, check the spine and download the full PDF.

Lesson 3 of 4 · 2:14

Starts muted, with captions. Use the speaker icon in the player for sound.

Start the cover from inside your book, because the trim size, page count and spine all have to match your interior. The lesson generates a cover, makes the title easier to read and checks it for KDP.

Step by step

  1. Open the cover from the book

Open Book, then Book setup, and add your author name. Book setup also tells you if the spine is too thin for spine text. Click Design the cover, and the form opens with your title, trim size and page count already filled in.

  2. Set up and generate

Check the book type, pick a style and describe the cover. Turn on Kids Book Character and choose your book so the cover is based on the same character as your pages. Then click Generate Cover. In this lesson it took about a minute, and that part is sped up.

  3. Adjust the front

You get the back, the spine and the front together. To change something, type it and send it, such as “make the title bigger and easier to read”. Make sure the title is readable when the cover is tiny, because that's how people see it on Amazon.

  4. Spine, check and export

If the book is too thin for spine text, turn on Hide Spine Text. Open Details to check KDP readiness: the trim size, the page count and the spine width. Then click Full PDF to download the whole cover.
